Linda M. Hartman
Stitcher, Pennsylvania
Linda M. Hartman is an embroiderer who has contributed to the Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island tapestry panels. A resident of Glenshaw, Pennsylvania, she has been stitching for over 50 years. Linda learned to embroider probably from her mother when she was a young girl. Prior to joining America's Tapestry, she practiced cross stitch, canvaswork, needlepoint, and lace making.
While working on the panels, Linda has utilized stem, cable, split, long and short, Smyrna cross, rice, and closed eyelet stitches. The cable, split, long and short, Smyrna cross, rice, and closed eyelet were all new to her through the project. She was inspired to join by the chance to be part of history. Since joining, Linda has learned that there are many untold stories of people who made sacrifices during the Revolution, including that the first "Don't Tread on Me" flag was made in Pennsylvania and is in the Fort Pitt Museum, and that Rebecca Young was a flag maker.
