Erin Vogel

Stitcher, Connecticut

Erin Vogel is an embroiderer on the Connecticut tapestry panel. A resident of West Hartford, she has been stitching for over 10 years. Having learned basic stitches from her mother before largely teaching herself, Erin's prior needle arts practice includes beading, canvaswork or needlepoint, and quilting including piecework and appliqué. While working on the panel, Erin has utilized three stitches entirely new to her: Gobelin Filling stitch to mimic the texture of brick on a chimney, Hungarian stitch, and Basket filling stitch to replicate the look of shingles on a roof — with Basket filling being her favorite of the three. Erin was drawn to America's Tapestry by the appeal of slow stitching together in a world where technology has taken over — she loved the idea of creating something beautiful and inspiring as a community. While working on the panel, she discovered the remarkable story of Mrs. Watson, a figure she had never encountered before joining the project. Looking towards our nation's anniversary, Erin hopes that we continue to come together to make beautiful things with our hands.
