Maryland Center for History and Culture

America's Tapestry comes to the Maryland Center for History and Culture in Baltimore from April 2028 through July 2028, one stop on a national tour that opened at the Muscarelle Museum of Art in Williamsburg, Virginia, in June 2026 and now travels the original thirteen colonies. The full collection of needlework panels — one for each colony, stitched by some two thousand volunteers to mark the nation's 250th anniversary — will be on view at Maryland's oldest cultural institution, founded in 1844 as the Maryland Historical Society and renamed in 2020 to reflect a wider remit across history and the arts.

The Center has occupied the Enoch Pratt House in Baltimore's Mount Vernon neighbourhood since 1919, and its collections run from eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Maryland painting, silver and furniture to the H. Furlong Baldwin Library's millions of manuscripts and photographs. Among its holdings is the original manuscript of "The Star-Spangled Banner", written by Francis Scott Key in the harbour below the museum — a reminder that the questions this project takes up in thread were fought over first on Maryland ground.

The Maryland panel was stitched in this building, which makes the Center both a host venue and part of the tapestry's own history.
